1.About Cup magnet

The original intention of the magnetic assembly base on various aspects, include prevent brittle magnets to crack while greatly enhance magnetic strength at the same time, and pot magnet is one of the outstanding representative magnetic assemblies which embody these two advantages.

The Structure of Cup magnet

The structure of regular pot magnets consists of three parts: a permanent magnet, steel shell and spacer. Neodymium, Samarium Cobalt, Ferrite and Alnico magnets are all can apply to pot magnet that encased in a steel shell. Steel shell, permanent magnet and attracted part will form an integrally magnetic circuit.

Cost Reduction of Pot Magnet Holder

For pot magnet, cost reduction can be achieved by two options: lowering magnet’s grade and optimize the overall design.

Low cost magnet can be served to both turning and stamping design. Relevant structural optimization is mainly focus on the steel shell while thinning magnet’s thickness at the same time.

1. Turning Design:

For turning design, dimensional change of the steel shell is convenient due to its processing method.

2. Stamping Design:

The stamping shell is subject to the many factors, and thus magnet manufacturers will place a steel spacer with corresponding thickness between original shell and thinner magnet to save costs.

Take the case of D25 pot magnet, the attractive force of the original and updated design is 245N and 220N respectively, which are both higher than the industry standard of 215N. Simulation results of magnetic field indicate that magnetic flux leakage is serious in the original design that means magnet is relatively thick to the steel shell.

SDM have some reservations about cost reduction behavior of pot magnet. The earliest design is aimed at very specific application, and also reserved enough design margin even structure can be optimized. Application scenarios for each model have been greatly enlarged over the years, and it is not necessary for every application to reach the attractive force of the earliest design. Meanwhile, cost factor has also promoted the development of updated design, and actually, updated design cannot satisfy requirements for whole previous applications.

Besides grade of magnet and structure parameters, attractive force of pot magnet is also influenced by the material, composition and size of testing object, and contact way between pot magnet and object may cause neglected air gap.
