Chenxiang wood is a dried woody oily part of the plant of the family Thymelaeaceae, which is a wood, spice, and traditional Chinese medicine. When stimulated by trauma or oil fungus infection in the heart of the agaric tree, a large amount of resin is secreted to help heal, producing a rich aroma of tissue during the process. Due to their high density, these parts can sink underwater, also known as "submerged fragrance".
In many parts of the world, agaric wood is a precious spice that is used for burning incense, extracting spices, adding to wine, or directly carving into ornaments. Chenxiang wood is also known as Chenshui incense. The agaric wood is hard, mostly not floating in water, and has a slightly bitter taste with a sweet taste. The dense smoke during combustion emits a strong aroma and exudes black oily substances.
