A membrane switch is a user interface device made up of several mechanical and electrical layers, and used as a switch to turn a device or function on or off. Unlike mechanical switches, which are generally constructed with copper and plastics, membrane switches are printed circuits on film.
Membrane switches are used widely across various markets and applications, offering a compelling alternative to traditional mechanical switches. Advantages include extremely low profile, high durability , tactile capability, integration with graphic overlays and illumination, plus simple electrical and mechanical integration.

SWITCH BUTTON
Structure of the switch is the bone of membrane switch to decide the tactile feeling and life time of a membrane keypad; a number of frequent used structures are developed from three switch paterns listed below.
Non-tactile button structured by upper circuit and lower circuit; no click feeling. Emboss the overlay can make it become tactile switch but the click feeling would be poor. Generally, the life time of a flat type switch could be up to 10 million click cycles.
Unless specified otherwise, a nickel-plated 4-leg snap dome of dia. 12.2mm and actuation force 280g is the standard metal dome used in JIT for membrane keypads. Various size snap domes of different actuation force, dome with gold plating, dimpled or pimpled domes are available for option to meet your demand.
The life time of a metal dome switch is at least 1 million click cycles, and metal dome made by specific manufacturer could be durable up to 5 million cycles.
CIRCUIT LAYER
The circuit layer is basically made of polyester film(PET) printed with conductive and UV dielectric inks; it also can be replaced by FPC made of polyimide film and FCCL or rigid PCB made of CCL to gain better machincal or thernmal properities.
PET Circuit
The PET circuit supports good chemical resistance to a certain solvents and oils and thermal resistance to temperature 85°C for 24 hours, but it is not suitable to be die-folded and doesn't resist to the heat of soldering process, neither. Contact pins on tail of the PET circuit can be made pitch 1.0mm, 1.27mm, or 2.54mm with carbon printing or pitch 2.54mm with male/ female connector supported.
FPC
FPC, flexible printed circuit, also called Flex PCB, is made of polyimide and FCCL for making a membrane switch which requires the circuit layer to fulfill the following features
1.To protect circuit function against high operation voltage or high current.
2.To sustain high working temperature during soldering or SMT procedure,
3.Enhance resistance to die-folding or frequent bending on the tail ribbon,
4.Multi-layer structure with plated through hole,
5.Fine-line design or contact pitch to be 0.5mm or less.

6. Read Adhesive Layer |
This adhesive layer bonds the entire membrane switch package to the product enclosure, housing, or to a rigid support panel. | |
7. Rigid Support Layer |
This optional layer can add structural integrity to the membrane switch assembly. |
Membrane switch panels can be built with non-tactile switches, which activate with 4 – 8 oz of touch pressure. Non-tactile switches are less expensive and provide the longest switch life. Tactile switches have a snap-action feel and may also be incorporated into a membrane switch, enhancing tactile feedback, but with a greater cost and lower switch life.
