Couplings
, a mechanical component used to firmly connect the driving and driven shafts in different mechanisms to rotate together, and transmit motion and torque. Sometimes it is also used to connect shafts with other parts (such as gears, pulleys, etc.). The coupling can simultaneously compensate for the deviation (including axial deviation, radial deviation, angular deviation, or comprehensive deviation) between two shafts due to inaccurate manufacturing and installation, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion; And mitigate impact and absorb vibration.
Couplings can be divided into two categories:
rigid couplings
and
flexible couplings
.
Rigid couplings
do not have buffering and the ability to compensate for the relative displacement of the two axes, requiring strict alignment between the two axes. However, this type of coupling has a simple structure, low manufacturing cost, convenient assembly, disassembly, and maintenance, and can ensure high alignment between the two axes, with a large transmission torque, making it widely used. Commonly used include flange couplings, sleeve couplings, and clamp couplings.
Flexible couplings
can also be divided into non elastic element flexible couplings and elastic element flexible couplings. The former type only has the ability to compensate for the relative displacement of two axes, but cannot buffer and reduce vibration. Common types include slider couplings, toothed couplings, universal couplings, and chain couplings; The latter type, due to its inclusion of elastic components, not only has the ability to compensate for the relative displacement of two axes, but also has buffering and vibration reduction effects. However, the transmitted torque is generally limited by the strength of the elastic components and is not as good as the flexible coupling without elastic components. Common types include elastic sleeve pin coupling, elastic pin coupling, plum blossom coupling, tire type coupling, snake spring coupling, and spring coupling, etc
Coupling performance:

Mobility.
The transferability of a coupling refers to the ability to compensate for the relative displacement of two rotating components. Factors such as manufacturing and installation errors between connected components, temperature changes during operation, and deformation under load all require portability. Removable performance compensates or alleviates additional loads between shafts, bearings, couplings, and other components caused by relative displacement between rotating components.

Buffering.
For situations where the load is frequently started or the working load changes, the coupling needs to have elastic components that play a buffering and vibration reducing role to protect the prime mover and working machine from less or no damage.
