This bokken is made of selected top quality Japanese Red Oak (Aka gashi ) and features Katana-like shape for a more realistic shinken feeling when training.

The Red Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called Aka gashi , greatly differs from the Red Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken. While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese White Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.

Akagashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks. Because of the durability and weight of Akagashi it's widely regarded as great material for making high quality Bokken.

Bokken – also called Bokuto - are wooden swords are used for practicing Kendo, Aikido, Iaido and other martial arts as substitutes for more dangerous and expensive swords like Katana. In order to safely handle katana or other Budo weapons, a swordsman must first master techniques with a training sword. Because they are made from real, carefully selected wood like shinai, Bokken must be none the less checked regularly for cracks or splinters. As they are carefully crafted, they must be equally carefully maintained.
