What is The Thermocouple sensor?

A Thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature. Thermocouples consist of two wire legs made from different metals. The wires legs are welded together at one end, creating a hot junction,which is exposed to the heat source. The terminals of the two wires are connected to the temperature measuring instrument(an electronic display unit).

What is the RTD(Resistance Temperature Detector)?

While the thermocouple measures temperature with the voltage between two dissimilar metal wires, RTD measures by the resistance of a simple wire.The resistance value changes as the temperature changes. Type C/Type D/ Type G Temperature range 0--2300°C

Type C/D/G W-Re wire are born only for measuring extremely high temperatures, max 2300°C,and continue workable in around 2000°C, vaccum or inert gas enviroment. The W-Re wires are usually protected by Tungsten tube(sheath) or Molybdenum tube. Normal ceramic or Stainless steel material will not work under such high temperature.

A simple picture shows how the Thermocouple works

when the hot junction experiences a change in temperature, a voltage is created between the two wires(the Seeback effect) . The voltage can then be interpreted using thermocouple reference tables to calculate the temperature. The probe from Hot junction to the cold junction is mostly called Thermocouple. This is how a thermocouple measures temperature.

Thermocouple Wire types(the dissimilar metal wires)

The thermocouple wire is the key to measuring temperature. It goes by pair meter. One pair meter includes both Positive and Negative wire. It is suggested to select wires according to the heat source. Type C & Type D & Type G thermocouple wire are commonly used for temperature around 2000 °C. They are not listed in the ASTM Standards.

How to measure the Flat surface & Curved surface temperature?

The Pad type Probe is designed for use in industrial applications to measure surface temperature
by way of attachment via weld, braze, cement, or clamp. The pad is flexible to easy form to the contour of a flat or curved surface.

Thermocouple wire by pairs

Select the thermocouple wires as per the temperature range.For example, if the target is over 2000 °C, Type C WRe5/26 wire is suggested.

Thermocouple Probe with Bend

The probe can be fabricated with different materials, stainless and Nickel based inconel product. Some can be bent to meet the measure conditions.

Welded on the curved surface

When required to measure the temperature of irregular shapes,curved surface, round surface, welding the pad on the surface is recommended.
