Product Description

Strut channel is a standardized formed structural system used in the building and electrical industries for lightweight structural support, typically to support wiring, piping or mechanical components such as air conditioning or ventilation systems. Struts are usually formed from sheet metal folded into an open channel shape with inwardly bent lips to provide additional rigidity and serve as a location for mounting interconnecting components. An increasing number of struts are made of fiberglass, a highly corrosion-resistant material known for its lightweight strength and rigidity. [1] Struts usually have some type of hole in the base to facilitate interconnection or to fasten the stanchion to the underlying building structure. The main advantage of post channels in construction is that there are many options available for quickly and easily attaching lengths and other items to post channels using a variety of specialized post specific fasteners and bolts. They can be assembled very quickly with a minimum of tools and a moderately trained workforce, which in many applications reduces costs significantly. Pillar channel installations can often also be modified or added on with relative ease, if desired. For most applications, the only alternative to strut channels is custom fabrication using rebar and other commodity components, requiring welding or extensive drilling and bolting, but without the aforementioned advantages. The basic typical strut channel forms a box measuring approximately 41 mm x 41 mm (1 5/8 in x 1 5/8 in). Several additional sizes and combination shapes are also manufactured.

Material Description

Basic strut channel comes in the open box section 41×41 mm (1 5/8 by 1 5/8 inch) square cross section. A half height 41×21 mm (1-5/8 inch wide, 13/16 inch tall) cross section version is also available, used mostly where mounted directly to a wall as it has
significantly less stiffness and ability to carry loads across an open space or brace. A deep channel 62×41 mm (2 7/16 inches tall
and 1 5/8 inch wide) is also manufactured.

Material Description

The material used to form the channel is typically sheet metal with a thickness of 1.5 mm or 2.5 mm (12 or 14 gauge; 0.1046 inch
or 0.0747 inch, respectively). Several variations are available with different hole patterns for mounting to walls and supports. Solid channel has no holes predrilled, and must either be drilled on site or mounted in another fashion. Punched channel has round holes, large enough for an M16 or 5/8 inch threaded steel rod or bolts, punched in the top of the channel at regular 48 mm (1 7/8 inch) centers. Half-slot channel has short, rounded end rectangular slots punched out on 50 mm (2 inch) centers. Slot channel has longer slots on 100 mm (4 inch) centers. In metric system based products, the eyelets are about 11×13 mm.
