Xylitol is a sugar alcohol compound with the molecular formula C5H12O5, which is a colorless or white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Xylitol occurs naturally in various fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. in very small quantities. Humans produce small amounts of xylitol through normal metabolism. Xylitol is a sweetener that can be used as a food additive and sugar substitute, and its sweetness is the same as that of sucrose. Xylitol contains only 2.4 calories per gram, 40% less than regular sugar. In food and beverages, xylitol is used as a sweetener in desserts, milk, coffee, chocolate, candy and chewing gum. In cosmetics, xylitol is used in cleansers, creams and lotions. In oral cleansing products, it is used in toothpastes and mouthwashes.
