The exposed parts of the mounted unit are smooth, although not necessarily smooth enough for super delicate fabrics or expensive silk scarves. It is very lightweight and seems cheap at first (and it is very inexpensive, anyway). The back edges (which will be against the wall) are pretty sharp.
When I looked closer, I was impressed by two little things that are not typical of bargain priced hooks. First, the package includes matching silver plastic screw caps to cover the naked screws. You first put each screw into one of the clear plastic rings provided, and after you have screwed the unit into the wall, you press the metallic silver caps on. The second surprise is that the hooks are not soldered on but screwed into the base plate with 2 screws each -- looks very strong.
Forget about the "towels and hats" the title description mentions: the back plate is only about 11 inches long, a good size for hanging jewelry, belts, keys, leashes, etc.
