Can you print on coffee bags?
In order to produce customised coffee bags, printing is a necessary step. Classic printing methods for coffee packaging have been well established for many years. The high-quality results of rotogravure printing make it popular, especially for larger custom coffee packaging orders.
However, the increasing digitalisation of printing means that roasters have more options than ever when it comes to their coffee bags. Compared to traditional printing techniques, digital printing is more suitable for low MOQs and shorter lead times, but can still produce high-quality coffee packaging.
Do you need a valve on a coffee bag?
As beans roast, the enticing aromas we associate with a fresh cup of coffee start to develop, and the chemical reaction creates a lot of carbon dioxide. Some carbon dioxide is given off during the roasting process, but even more is released after the roasting stops and the coffee beans rest. For a few days after roasting, coffee beans undergo what's called the "degassing period," and that's where the valve and holes you see on your coffee bag come in.
During the degassing period, the coffee beans continue to release carbon dioxide, which is good—that release helps preserve your coffee's flavor and aroma. But the degassing doesn't happen all at once. While the most carbon dioxide is released in the first few hours and days after roasting, coffee beans can continue to give off carbon dioxide for a few weeks after roasting (especially dark roast beans, which are roasted longer than other varieties).
When coffee beans are bagged shortly after roasting, they'll continue releasing carbon dioxide inside their packaging. Without an exit point, those gasses can build up inside the bag and cause it to expand or even tear. A valve allows carbon dioxide to escape without letting oxygen or moisture in, both of which can make your coffee go stale or bad more quickly.
How many grams is a standard bag of coffee?
Common size options include: 8 oz, 10 oz, 12 oz, 1 lb, 2 lb, 5 lb.
12 ounce and 5 pound bags are the most frequently used bags for coffee in North America, meaning they'll likely be available at a more affordable price.
We recommend choosing a bag size that fits your business model. For instance, wholesale coffee roasters will need to purchase 5 pound bags as well as typical 12 ounce or 1 pound retail bags to sell to clients.
Or, if you're running a high‑end subscription service specializing in rare coffees, an 8 ounce bag may suit you just fine.
