1. Can fume hoods be used as a storage space for volatile, flammable or noxious chemicals?

Chemicals can be stored during an ongoing analysis but ducted fume hoods are not designed for permanent chemical storage. Items placed inside the fume hood can interfere with air flow and may cause contaminants to be drawn in.

2. What is the importance of a fume hood's face velocity?

Face velocity is the measurement of speed at which air enters the ducted fume hood's opening. Face Velocity measurement is one of the tests recommended by ASHRAE 110 to check whether a fume hood is effective in containing chemical fumes. per ASHRAE 110, a properly working ducted fume hood should have a face velocity between 0.30-0.60 m/s.

3 . What is ASHRAE 110-2016 and how does it test the fume hood's performance?

The ASHRAE 110-2016 standard is a comprehensive method for evaluating the operator safety of fume hoods by determining quantitatively and repeatably how well the fume hood contains vapors released in the work zone.
This American standard has three parts:
a. Airflow Visualization - Local and gross airflow visualization tests conducted to observe airflow patterns inside work chamber
b. Face Velocity Measurements - Face velocity and uniformity tested at 100% and design sash opening position
c. Tracer Gas Containment - uses Sulfur hexafluoride to test if there are leakage across the fume hood.

4 . What are the factors to consider when purchasing a ducted fume hood?
