Lithium Battery Separator celgard battery separator for lithium ion battery production
This film is used as li-ion battery separator in battery R&D.
Battery separator is a porous sheet placed between the positive and negative electrodes in a liquid electrolyte, a gel electrolyte, or a molten salt battery. Its function is to prevent physical contact of the positive and negative electrodes while serving as an electrolyte reservoir to enable free ionic transport. According to structure, the separator can be divided as microporous membrane and nonwoven cloth. The former is a sheet, in which micro-size voids are introduced, while the latter is a felt or mat, in which fibers are randomly laid down to form numerous voids. The microporous membranes are featured by thinness (about 25 um or less), small pore size (<1 um) and low porosity (~40%). The nonwoven clothes are featured by thickness (80-300 um), large pore size (10-50 um), and high porosity (60-80%).
The improved porosity leads to lower internal resistance, desirable for smaller, high-power batteries. The improved meltdown property extends the integrity of the film longer during a thermal event, giving the cell more time to dissipate the heat, thereby increasing the possibility of avoiding a more serious event.
