Character

It is irregular, round or oblate, and varies in size. The surface is white, light red or tan, uneven, and porous like honeycomb.
The body is light and powdery, fragile, white or light red in section, granular, with small pores, and hygroscopic. Odorless and
slightly astringent. The body is light, loose, large, white or reddish.

Original form

1. Magnesite crystal structure belongs to trigonal crystal system. A single crystal is rhombohedral or complex trigonal trihedral,
but it is rare. They are often stalactite, massive, earthy, and crusty. Pure white, often dyed gray, pale yellow, light green or
light brown. Transparent to translucent, glass luster or dull earthy luster, and sometimes pearl luster on the crystal surface.
Hardness of 4.5-5, brittleness, uneven fracture. Relative density is 4-4.5.
2. It is block-shaped, soil-like, porous to dense, skin-shell-like, and concentric band-shaped with fine fiber structure. White to
grayish yellow, brown purple, light purple. Earthy luster, also silky luster. Hardness 4, relative density 3.5-3.8.

Habitat distribution

1. Produced in the oxidation zone of primary lead-zinc deposits. It is mainly produced by oxidative decomposition of sphalerite to
produce soluble zinc sulfate, which is replaced by carbonate calcite or native calcite.
2. Produced in the oxidized zone of the deposit, it is a secondary mineral. Mainly caused by sphalerite alteration. Symbiosis with
siderite.
Both are produced in Hunan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places.

Trait Identification

(1) Raw limestone (magnesite) is a massive or stalactite aggregate. Irregular blocks. White, off-white or light yellow, streaks
off-white to light brown. Some of the surface is concave or porous, like a honeycomb. Soil-like luster, opaque, light body, hard
and brittle, brittle, white or light yellow in section, some yellow and white like patterns. Odorless and slightly astringent. (2)
Floating limestone (hydrozinc ore) is mostly white with many pores. Light body, soft texture, strong water absorption, sticky
tongue. All are white, light and loose.

Microscopic identification

(1) Raw limestone (magnesite) Under the transmission polarizer: the color is transparent in the flakes, but due to iron pollution,
the crystals are worse, often brownish brown, the crystal rhombohedral is clear, and the particle size is generally 0.01mm. Grains
are closely packed with grains. Refractive index Ne = 1.849, No = 1.621; birefringence Ne-No = 0.228. Interference color is
advanced color, more vivid than carbonate ore; parallel extinction. Uniaxial crystal; negative light. (2) Floating limestone
(hydrozincite) Under the transmission polarizer: the microstrip is yellow, often in the shape of ring needles and grains. The
needles are usually distributed along cleavage cracks, with a length of 0.03mm; the granular rhombohedron is clear, and the
particle size is 0.01-0.02mm. Refractive index Np = 1.640, Nm = 1.736, Ng = 1.750; birefringence Ng-Np = 0.110; bright
interference color (higher); parallel extinction. Biaxial crystal; positive light.
Quality Mark The 1995 edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China stipulates that this product is calculated as
dry products and contains not less than 40.0% zinc oxide (ZnO).

Calamine

The main component is zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), which still contains a small amount of calcium oxide (CaO) 0.27%, magnesium oxide
(MgO) 0.45%, iron oxide (Fe2O3) 0.58%, and manganese oxide (MnO) 0.01%. Of these, zinc is often replaced by a small amount of iron
(divalent). Some still contain a small amount of cobalt, copper, cadmium, lead and trace amounts of germanium and indium. Calamine
in Qingdao and Jinan contains a small amount of impurities such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and a very small amount of
sodium.

Limestone

The main component is basic zinc carbonate [Zn5 (CO3) 2 · (OH) 6], and contains impurities such as lead, cadmium, magnesium, iron,
and aluminum.

This product is a carbonate mineral calcite family of magnesite, mainly containing zinc carbonate (ZnCO3). After digging, wash and
dry to remove debris.

Character

This product is a lumpy aggregate, showing irregular lumps. Off-white or light red, powdery surface, matte, uneven, porous,
honeycomb-like. Light and fragile. Weiqi, slightly astringent.

Identify

(1) Take 1g of this product's coarse powder, add 10ml of dilute hydrochloric acid, that is, boil, carbon dioxide gas will be
generated, and lead into the calcium hydroxide test solution, and a white precipitate will be formed.
(2) Take 1g of this product's coarse powder, add 10ml of dilute hydrochloric acid to dissolve it, filter, and add the potassium
ferrocyanide test solution to the filtrate to form a white precipitate or a small amount of blue precipitate.

Assay

Take about 0.1g of this product powder, dry it at 105 ℃ for 1 hour, weigh it accurately, place it in a conical flask, add 10ml of
diluted hydrochloric acid, shake to dissolve the zinc salt, add concentrated ammonia test solution and ammonia-ammonium chloride
buffer (PH10.0) 10ml each, shake well, add 10ml disodium hydrogen phosphate test solution, shake, and filter. Wash the Erlenmeyer
flask and the residue with a mixture of 1 part of ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer solution (pH 10.0) and 4 parts of water 3
times, 10 ml each time. Combine the washing solution and the filtrate, add 15 ml of 30% triethanolamine solution and chromium A
small amount of black T indicator was titrated with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium titration solution (0.05mol / L)
until the solution changed from purplish red to pure blue. Each 1ml of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium titration (0.05mol
/ L) is equivalent to 4.069mg of zinc oxide (ZnO).
This product is calculated on the basis of dry products, and the content of zinc oxide (ZnO) should not be less than 40.0%.
