Fumed silica synthesizes from the pure form of silane hydrolysis in a flame of hydrogen and oxygen at about 1000 degrees Celsius temperature. The process uses a metallurgical silicon reaction to obtain the product via silicon dioxide reduction into minerals with hydrogen chloride and cokes. These types of silica products come with a relatively thick effect. Here, the size of its primary particle ranges from 5nm to 50nm. These products have non-porous particles and a surface area of up to 600 square meters per gram. Besides, the density of such silica products is approximately 180 kilograms per cubic meter.

Fumed or pyrogenic silica products are further available in two types, which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic silicas. Hydrophilic fumed silica is a white powder, which forms by the reaction of volatile chlorosilanes and oxyhydrogen flames. Accordingly, they form silicon dioxide in molten sphere shapes. Hydrophilic silica has a dense structure and it has hydroxyl groups to disperse in water based on its water absorption abilities. In contrast, hydrophobic fumed silica or silicon dioxide compound possesses hydrophobic groups bonded chemically to the silicon�s surface. These groups are usually available as polydimethylsiloxane or alkyl chains.

These silica products are available with a relatively less density than hydrophilic silica. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic
pyrogenic silica may reduce the absorption of moisture levels, and resist abrasion, corrosion, and scratch problems. Besides, they help in thickening, and anti-setting, and provide sag resistance in various polar systems. If this is not enough, a fumed form of silicon dioxide allows anti-caking, free-flow, and reinforcement. Fumed or pyrogenic silica is a basic type of functional product used primarily in semiconductors, automobiles, and construction industries. It also works as a reinforcement agent and may optimize any product by improving its abrasive properties and anti-settling and anti-sagging effects. Common applications of these silica compounds are a lawn care and agriculture, sealants and adhesives, composites, coatings, silicone sealants, coatings, toners, greases, and beauty care or skin care products.
