In Japan, there is a long tradition of wearing slip-on sandals called
"tsukkake."
The Japanese word
"tsukkake"
refers to the motion of slipping one's toes into a shoe. That is how this easy-to-wear style of footwear earned its name.
The style of Japanese-style homes has long required frequent trips in and out of the home. One often needed to travel between buildings, move back and forth between indoors and the garden to hang laundry, visit the bath or toilet, and so on ... For this reason,
"tsukkake"
style slip-on sandals have long been used in Japan as a convenient form of footwear.
In recent times, fewer Japanese homes have gardens, and fewer households now keep
"tsukkake"
in their entryways and rear exits.
