Products Description
Folding fans / Enshu cotton / SDGs
Folding fans can be used to easily generate a breeze. Dozens of long, thin bamboo or wooden ribs are bound together and secured at the rivet at the end of the fan, allowing the leaves to be folded when not in use and unfolded for use by extending the adhered paper in a stepwise way to create the surface of the fan. The fan can be stored in a small space when folded. Its elongated shape makes it easy to carry around when folded, and many people use it to cool off when they are outside in the summer.
In Japan, folding fans are often carried around when wearing yukata, which is worn as summer clothing at summer festivals, fairs, Bon dances, and in the evening. They are sometimes carried as lucky charms at weddings as well.
In recent years, folding fans have been increasingly used as casual items in everyday settings to combat the extreme heat in view of the SDGs.
The material used in this item is Enshu cotton pongee, a kind of woven cotton cloth that has been carefully handed down through the generations since the Edo period in Hamamatsu City of Shizuoka Prefecture, and it is still being meticulously woven by hand today using traditional techniques. Enshu cotton pongee is unique for its nostalgic warmth despite its rustic look.
