Until the 16th century, alum was essentially of natural origin and came mainly from quarries in Syria or Italy, in the Tolfa mountains. Alum stone was used as a "mordant" for dyeing coloured fabric as far back as Antiquity and continued into the Middle Ages (salt is used today), a substance that causes or accentuates the adhesion of the dye to the fabric.
