All engines are 90° V engines with either 8, 12, 16 or 20 cylinders; the cylinder bore is 170 mm, the piston stroke is 190 mm or 210 mm, depending on the series. The crankshaft rotates counterclockwise. The fuel injection takes place with an electronically controlled common rail injection.
The engines have an air filter for each cylinder bank, which is connected directly to the turbocharger's compressor via a pipe curved at 90°. The two turbochargers are located between the cylinder banks. The right-hand turbocharger, viewed from the power-emitting side, is switched on and off as required using electronically controlled hydraulic flaps. The compressed intake air is pushed out of the bottom of the compressor and routed via a pipe in the longitudinal direction of the engine to the water-cooled intercooler on the power delivery side of the engine. From there, the cooled intake air is directed downwards and then flows over a 90° section towards the control side (front) of the engine into the intake bridge, which is located below the cylinder banks outside the V. The exhaust manifold is on the inside of the V and leads the exhaust gases into the turbocharger's turbine before they go up into the exhaust.
The water cooler and oil cooler, designed as a plate heat exchanger, are mounted on the front of the engine, as well as a coolant pump, a switchable double fuel filter and either one or two oil centrifuges; two oil centrifuges require an automatic oil filter, which can be supplied on request. The high-pressure pump for the common rail system is installed under the oil filter. The engine has individual cylinder heads, each with its own cylinder head cover. The two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder are controlled by a camshaft underneath via tappets, bumpers and rocker arms.
