Sodium thiocyanate is a white orthorhombic crystal or powder. The relative density is 1.735g/cm3. The melting point is 287°C. It is easy to deliquescence in the air, and produces toxic gas when it encounters acid. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other solvents. The aqueous solution is neutral, and it will form blood-colored ferric thiocyanate with iron salt, it will not react with ferrous salt, it will produce yellow sodium bisulfate with concentrated sulfuric acid, it will react with cobalt salt to form dark blue cobalt thiocyanide, and it will react with silver salt or Copper salts react to form white silver thiocyanide precipitates or black copper thiocyanide precipitates.
