FAQ
1)Is multiple pistons better?
The number of pistons in a multi-piston caliper does not make it "better" or "worse". The overall design elements of the caliper, structural rigidity, bolt positioning and the materials used to manufacture the caliper determine its performance and feel. In general, multi-piston calipers are designed around a fairly large pad profile, as the larger volume of friction material translates directly into increased pad life. As pads get longer, it becomes important to distribute the forces from the pad pistons evenly along the length of the pad backing plate, which is why multiple smaller pistons are used rather than just one large piston as is common in many OE calipers.
2)
Why are the pistons in the calipers different sizes?
One negative consequence of using a larger/longer pad profile (usually the case with multi-piston calipers) is that the pads will wear at a tapered angle over the entire life of the pad. The pads will typically wear more at the leading edge (where the disc enters the caliper) and less at the trailing edge (where the disc leaves the caliper). To offset this differential piston ratio, combine careful piston positioning. The size of the piston will increase from the leading edge of the pad to the trailing edge.Larger pistons near the trailing edge exert more force on the pad backing plate than smaller pistons located at the leading edge, thus offsetting the tapered pad wear problem.
3)
How long can the discs and pads be used?
It is impossible to give a definitive answer to this question because there are so many variables that affect the wear life of brake discs and pads. These include driving style, frequency of brake application, vehicle load, brake operating temperature, etc. However, you will certainly experience longer disc and lining wear life compared to typical brake components.
