What is Lactose ?
Lactose is a special carbohydrate in human and mammal milk. It is a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose. Its molecular formula is C12H22O11. Lactose not only provides energy during infant development, but also participates in brain development.
Lactose is mainly used to make baby food.
In addition to providing energy to the body, lactose has physiological significance different from other sugars. Lactose in the human stomach is not digested and absorbed, but direct to the intestine. Lactose is easily broken down into glucose and galactose by lactase in the human intestine for absorption. Galactose is a glycolipid component of brain and nerve tissue, which is very important for the intellectual development of infants. It can promote the production of cerebral glycosides and mucopolysaccharides. Lactose can promote the formation of some lactic acid bacteria in the human intestine, inhibit the growth of putrefying bacteria, and contribute to intestinal peristalsis.
