Description:
Scandium, element symbol is Sc, atomic number is 21. Melting point: 1814 K (1541 °C), boiling point: 3103 K (2830 °C), density2.985 g/cm3. The element is a soft, silver-white transition metal, often mixed with gadolinium, erbium, etc. Scandium is slightly light yellow or pink when oxidized by air, is easily weathered and slowly dissolves in most dilute acids. However, in strong acid, an impermeable passivation layer is easily formed on the surface, so it does not react with the 1:1 mixture of nitric acid (HNO3) and hydrofluoric acid (HF). Scandium is often used to make special glasses and lightweight, high-temperature-resistant alloys.
Application:
Scandium is used to make scandium sodium lamps, solar photovoltaic cells and gamma ray sources. Scandium in its elemental form has been widely used in the doping of aluminum alloys to form high-strength and high-toughness aluminum alloys and new high-strength, corrosion-resistant and weldable aluminum alloys. Scandium is also an excellent modifier of iron. A small amount of scandium can significantly increase the strength and hardness of cast iron. In addition, scandium can also be used as an additive in high-temperature tungsten and chromium alloys. Elemental scandium is generally used in alloys, and scandium oxides also play an important role in ceramic materials. Like tetragonal zirconia ceramic materials that can be used as electrode materials for solid oxide fuel cells.
