What are the advantages of having a pool heat pump over just a pool heater?

Well, today we are happy to address this question! There are several advantages to the pool heat pump over gas heat pool heaters. Pool heat pumps can maintain constant temperature all summer long, for 1/2 to 3/4 the cost of gas or propane heaters accomplishing the same. Add a solar cover and save even more! Heat Pump pool heaters have longer warranties and generally will out last gas units by double. In order to properly address the rest of this equation, we must first define what a pool heat pump is. A pool heat pump does not generate it's own heat. A pool heat pump is a pump that operates at a minimum of 50 degrees Fahrenheit by using electricity and ambient air temperature.

The heat pump will capture the heat from the air and moves it from one place to another. As the pool pump circulates the pool's water, it passes through the filter and heat pump heater. The heat pump heater has a fan that draws the outside air and turns it into a gas and passes it over an evaporator coil. A liquid refridgerant inside the coil of the evaporator absorbs the heat and becomes a gas. The warm gas then passes to through the compressor. The compressor in turn, increases the heat and creates a very hot gas that will then pass through the condenser. From there the condenser transfers that heat from the hot gas to the cooler pool water that is circulating through the heater. Then the heated water returns to the pool. The hot gas on the other hand has cooled and returns to it's liquid state and flows back to the evaporator and starts the whole process again.

This method of heating your pool is, in our opinion one of the best ways to heat your pool as long as ambient air temperature remains above the 45-50ºF range. Typically these pool heat pumps do cost more in upfront costs however, over time, they cost MUCH less because they are a great deal more energy efficient! The best part about a heat pump type pool heater is that they last longer than gas pool heaters. Now that is a great savings!

Now we need to explain what a pool heater is defined as. With a pool heater there are 2 types that we typically recommend, gas-fired and solar. We will reference the gas-fired method in our explanation but know that the solar powered type works the same with the biggest difference being that it harnesses solar energy for heat production instead of using gas of any sort.

Gas-fired pool heaters use either natural gas or propane to heat your pool water. As the pump circulates the pool water, the water passes through the filter and the heater, just as in the heat pump. The gas is burned in the combustion chamber generating the heat that is transferred to the water. Then the water is returned to the pool. As you can see, the process is much simpler with this type of pool heating. However, they are only at peak efficiency when used for heating a pool for a short period of time. They are ideal if you would like your pool heated quickly. A good point to make about these types of heaters is that you can heat up your pool water's temperature regardless of the weather or climate you are living in.
