Working principle
Evacuated/vacuum tube solar collectors are designed to harness the power of solar energy using evacuated/vacuum tubes. These tubes are specially designed to absorb solar radiation and transfer the energy to a heat pipe via aluminum fins. As the heat pipe is heated, the working liquid inside vaporizes and rises to the top of the heat pipe where it comes into contact with the condenser. The condenser, which is inserted into the manifold port inside the solar collector manifold, transfers the heat to the cold water flow inside the manifold port. This process is repeated continuously, causing the working liquid to cool down and return to the bottom of the heat pipe, where it can be heated again. Ultimately, the cold water (glycol) inside the manifold port is heated and ready for use.
Indirect heat pipe solar collector heating systems, also known as closed loop systems, utilize a heat exchanger to transfer heat to potable water. This is especially important in colder climates, as impurities in mains water can deposit inside the collector tube. To prevent freezing, a special heat transfer fluid is used in the collector circuit. This fluid can be a mixture of water and glycol or 100% water. Systems that include glycol offer greater protection against freezing conditions.
