Products Description
Nanbu ironware / Tetsubin / Made in Japan / Teapots / Iwate
Nanbu ironware is a collective term for cast iron ware crafted in the cities of Morioka and Oshu in Iwate Prefecture since around the 17th century. Iron casting is a technique in which molten iron is poured into molds to create shapes. The most common cast iron ware products are tea kettles, teapots, tetsubin (iron kettles), pots, and other daily utensils. Recently, in addition to the traditional black version, cast iron ware is being produced in various shades of red, blue, and green, as well as in various patterns and designs, including traditional patterns such as arabesque and tortoiseshell.
Nanbu tetsubin are said to be free of "kanake," or the metallic odor and taste produced when iron is dissolved in water. This allows hot water boiled in Nanbu tetsubin to be used for brewing tea with a clean taste. Durable and resistant to rust, Nanbu tetsubin can be one's lifelong companion if well cared for. Recently, in addition to the traditional black version, cast iron ware is being produced in various shades of red, blue, and green, as well as in various patterns and designs. Having been exported to the United States, Europe, and other Asian countries, Nanbu ironware is gaining popularity not only among tea connoisseurs but also among foreigners. Furthermore, as the inner surface of Nanbu tetsubin has exposed iron, the iron dissolves when water is boiled. The iron content in water boiled in Nanbu tetsubin is 15 to 19 times greater than that in water boiled in aluminum or stainless steel kettles, making this an increasingly attractive way to supplement one's iron intake.
