The fiber collimator is formed by accurately positioning the tail fiber and the self-focusing lens. It can convert the transmission light in the optical fiber into collimated light (parallel light) or couple external parallel light (approximately parallel) into single mode optical fiber.
The optical fiber collimator can convert the light beam with larger divergence angle (small beam waist) into the light beam with smaller divergence angle (large beam waist) through the lens, thus coupling into other optical devices with lower loss.
One is a collimator that can directly contact with bare optical fibers. This is the cheapest and easiest method, but such collimators are usually permanently connected to optical fibers.
There is a mechanical cross section between another kind of optical fiber collimator and the optical connector, for example, FC or SMA type; It is not normally used for bare optical fibers. The collimator can be conveniently installed or removed from the spliced optical fiber.
The same device can also emit collimated light beams into optical fibers or be used for coupling between optical fibers: firstly, the first collimator is used to collimate the light emitted from the first optical fiber, and then another collimator is used to focus the collimated light beams into the second optical fiber. Generally speaking, optical fiber connectors can be seen as natural cross sections between optical fiber optics and free space optics.
Another application is to combine the back reflector with additional optical elements. For example, a Faraday rotator can be inserted to obtain a fiber Faraday mirror, or a quarter-wave plate can be inserted to obtain a half wave plate mirror. In some other cases, fiber filters or saturation absorbers can be used.
