After applying symmetrical voltage to the stator winding of induction motor, a rotating air gap magnetic field is generated.Since the rotor winding is short-circuited, a rotor current will be generated.The interaction between the rotor current and the air-gap magnetic field produces an electromagnetic torque that drives the rotor to rotate.The speed of the motor must be lower than the synchronous speed of the magnetic field, because only in this way can the conductor of the rotor be induced to generate the potential of the rotor current and electromagnetic torque.So the motor is called an induction machine, also known as an induction motor.
Characteristics of asynchronous motor:
1. Small and lightweight.
2. It is easy to realize high-speed rotation with the rotation speed exceeding 10000r /min.
3. High operating efficiency at high speed and low torque.
