Astaxanthin is a keto-carotenoid within a group of chemical compounds known as terpenes. Astaxanthin is a
metabolite of zeaxanthin and canthaxanthin, containing both hydroxyl and ketone functional groups. It is a lipid-soluble pigment with red coloring properties.
