Non-tactile membrane switch keypad

An important difference between Non-Tactile membrane switch and Tactile membrane switch is that there is no mechanical movement-when the buttons are pressed, there is no feedback response. At the same time, Non-Tactile Membrane switches are basically flat surfaces without protrusions, but they also have embossed outer edges. Non-Tactile membrane switch allows the operator to quickly locate the button. The product has no tactile feel and no metal dome, but it has obvious cost advantages and is easier to clean. Unlike the tactile feedback of Tactile Membrane Switch, Non-Tactile Membrane Switch feedback reflects whether the button is activated or not through the color change of LEDs and the change of LCD screen content.

What are the pros and cons of non-tactile membrane switches?

Non-tactile membrane switches are far less complex to manufacture. Because they have fewer components, they can be manufactured at the lowest possible price. However, they can also require a different type of feedback to inform the user that a device has been interacted with, such as playing a tone or emitting light, so additional costs and complexities may be involved.

Because non-tactile membrane switches do not produce a physical response, users may experience a less-than-satisfying experience after pressing a button. In instances where tactile feedback is not important, non-tactile membrane switches can nevertheless provide a cost-effective method of user interaction.

Tactility can be produced through several methods

Internal Polydomes: Embossed into the top circuit or shorting layer. This method makes sense when there are many keys as it can positively affect the cost in application.

External Polydomes : Embossed into the graphic overlay. The same advantages are as those above but also gives the user a “bump” indicating where each key is.

Metal Domes: Individually placed component that creates a definitive “snap” when actuated. This method is the most common as the feel is the most uniform and offers many different sizes and trip forces.

Non-tactile switches are more common, for a variety of reasons. They are widely regarded as more reliable in terms of longevity, and are also more economical to produce because they contain fewer high end components (i.e. metal dome). The disadvantage that some manufacturers may see in the non-tactile variety is that users do not receive direct feedback (the “snap” mentioned above).
