Ethylene glycol
, the simplest aliphatic diol, has the chemical properties of alcohols. If it can generate ether and ester, it can be oxidized to generate aldehyde or acid, and can be condensed to generate ether. It can also be replaced by halogen. It reacts with acyl chloride or anhydride to form diester. Ethylene glycol is the raw material for producing polyester resin, alkyd resin and polyester fiber, and is also used as automobile antifreeze and aircraft engine refrigerant.
