In a nuclear accident or nuclear explosion, most casualties are caused by radioactive iodine poisoning of the thyroid gland. Children are the most at-risk group. However, there was no significant protective effect of potassium iodide administered 96 hours or earlier before 131I exposure. Conversely, taking potassium iodide after radioactive iodine exposure (16 hours or later) produced a smaller and rapidly decreasing blockade.
