Forklift Parking Brake Working Principle
The forklift parking brake is a self-energizing drum brake, which is installed on the high speed shaft of the gearbox. When
parking, the driver first step the foot brake pedal to slow down the forklift and stop the forklift, then engages neutral gear and pulls the handbrake to stop. When braking on a ramp, the forklift has a tendency to slide down on the ramp, and the forklift brake drum tends to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. At this time, the left shoe is a tight shoe and the right shoe is a booster shoe. Self-energizing drum brakes are generally used on heavy tonnage forklift.
The design of the forklift is very special. The front wheels are the driving wheels and the parking brake. Only the front wheels have the brakes. The rear wheels are only responsible for steering. In addition, the weight of the forklift is very large. For a 3T truck, self-weight will usually reach about four and a half tons, if it is fully loaded, the whole vehicle will reach about seven to eight tons! So the forklift parking brake should be in perfect condition.
