Design manufacturing tactile keyboards membrane switch circuit membrane switch keypad front panel for checkerboard application
Membrane switch keypad construction
Overlay | Polyester is usually the material of choice due to its superior chemical resistance and flex life compared to polycarbonate. Tiantai can either digitally print, screen-print, or employ a combination of both methods to ensure you get the right colors, textures and finishes your design requires.
Adhesive spacer |
This adhesive layer bonds the graphic overlay to the top circuit layer, and is typically an acrylic adhesive.
|
|
Top circuit layer | This is a 0.005″ – 0.007″ heat stabilized polyester printed with silver-filled electrically conductive inks and also dielectric inks.
Circuit spacer | This layer separates the top circuit from the bottom circuit so the switch remains normally open until the keypad is pressed. The circuit spacer is a polyester spacer with adhesive on both sides.
Lower circuit Layer | This is a 0.005″ – 0.007″ heat stabilized polyester printed with silver-filled electrically conductive inks and also dielectric inks. This layer terminates as a flexible tail that serves as the interconnect to controller PCBs or other electronics.
Back adhesive layer | Back adhesives are used in membrane switches to both attach the entire assembly to the end product, and to attach the graphical overlay layer to the circuit layer. |
Switch keys
-
- Tactile metal snap domes, in sizes from 6 to 25 mm and forces from 200 to 700 g, give strong tactile feedback under all temperature conditions.
- Embossed polyester tactile domes cost less for high volume parts with many keys. They can be formed in the overlay or hidden inside internal layers.
- Non-tactile keys are the least expensive and longest lasting.
- Capacitive touch sensors have no moving parts. They can be operated through durable, rigid front panels like acrylic or glass and adapt well to backlighting. Technomark’s ITO scribing capabilities open up new possibilities for transparent control panels.
- Large area keys can be pressed at any point and can cover the entire switch surface if desired. Typical applications are allowing handheld devices to be triggered without looking at them, or hands-off switches that can be operated by a knee or foot.
Membrane switch keypad mounting instructions & precautions
Handle membrane switches with care before mounting, as they are susceptible to damage. Adhere to these instructions for optimal performance;
1..Keep membrane switches flat before installation to prevent domes from inverting; bending may break LED connections, causing failures.
2..Actuate domed keys only on flat, hard surfaces to avoid domes inverting and shortening their lifespan.
3.Store membrane switches in a dry, room-temperature environment for maximum shelf life.
4.When mounting, ensure a clean, oil-free surface using a fixture to prevent switch bending during installation.
5.Enhance adhesion by using a soft roller after membrane mounting.
6.Avoid using a membrane that has been ripped off the fixture, as the domes may invert, rendering it unusable.
