Drill pipe is a type of steel pipe with a threaded tail, used to connect surface equipment of a drilling rig to drilling and grinding equipment or bottom hole devices located at the bottom of the drilling rig. The purpose of the drill pipe is to transport drilling mud to the drill bit and raise, lower, or rotate the bottom hole device together with the drill bit.

The drill pipe must be able to withstand significant internal and external pressure, twisting, bending, and vibration. In the process of oil and gas extraction and extraction, drill pipes can be used multiple times. Drill pipes are divided into three categories: square drill pipes, drill pipes, and weighted drill pipes. The connection order is square drill pipe (1 piece)+drill pipe (n pieces, determined by well depth)+weighted drill pipe (n pieces, determined by drilling tool combination design).

The steel grade of drill pipe refers to the grade of drill pipe steel, which is determined by the yield strength of the drill pipe steel. The API (American Petroleum Institute) divides drill pipe steel grades into five levels: D, E, 95 (X), 105 (G), 135 (S). The higher the steel grade of the drill pipe, the greater the yield strength of the pipe, and the greater the various strengths of the drill pipe. In the strength design of drill string, it is recommended to use the method of increasing steel grade to improve the strength of drill string, rather than increasing wall thickness.

Drill collars are generally divided into three types: spiral drill collars, non-magnetic drill collars, and integral drill collars.
(1) The overall drill collar is a smooth thick walled circular tube, with connecting threads machined at both ends.
(2) Spiral drill collars are machined with three right-handed spiral grooves on the outer cylindrical surface of the circular drill collar to reduce the contact area with the wellbore wall and effectively prevent pressure difference from sticking the drill bit
(3) Non magnetic drill collars are mainly used for monitoring during oil drilling, and their structure is the same as the overall drill collar. Non magnetic drill collars are made of N1310 low-carbon alloy steel, which is forged through strict chemical composition analysis. The material has undergone mechanical performance testing to ensure that its hardness, toughness, impact value, and corrosion resistance meet the standards, and it has good low magnetic permeability and good mechanical processing performance.
For the convenience of drilling, elevator slots and slip slots can be machined on the outer surface of the internal thread of the drill collar.
