Concept
ISHIMOKU
introduces new living spaces, furniture, and lifestyle items underits original brand, Kiriko Modern, which makes full use of the
characteristics of the eco-friendly material paulownia
. We create comfortable spaces for people by working on products with
three fundamental attitudes:
"choose good materials," "create with the best technology," and "create designs that will never get old. Kamo City, Niigata Prefecture, where Ishimoku is located, is famous forits paulownia chest of drawers and has a
history of over 220 years
.
Kamo is rich in forestresources, and during the Edo and Meiji periods,rivertransportation was well developed, so the city developed as a centerforthe collection and distribution of lumber cut from the mountains. Natural paulownia trees were also abundant, and planting of paulownia chests of drawers began when they became an industry in the region.
Sanjo City, a town of blacksmiths, is adjacent to the city.
Sanjo's sharp knives, such as Kanna and Chisel, were indispensable for making paulownia chests, which require exquisite workmanship.
Untilrecently, there was also a tradition of planting paulownia trees in the garden afterthe birth of a girl. Paulownia trees grow very quickly, and by the time a girl is ready to marry, she will have enough wood to make a wardrobe. Also, in Japan's hot and humid climate, a paulownia chest of drawers was perfect for storing precious kimonos.
In the past, expensive clothing was made of silk, and paulownia was the perfect material to protect it. At present, paulownia wood is rarely grown in Japan, and 80% of the wood consumed is imported. It does not mean that paulownia from China is inexpensive. The difference lies in the selection of the place of production and the processing of materials.
Ishimoku has selected a production area in China and established a factory there. Under our own management, we select the best paulownia wood to make materials that can be used for a long time. The process ofremoving the astringent taste and drying the paulownia wood will be effective when you use it later.
Compared to cheaper materials that do not undergo these processes, paulownia wood is resistant to stains, has strong resilience, and does not deteriorate easily even afterlong use. In fact, it enhances the texture of the material.
