Alpha-Arbutin's Skin Whitening Mechanism
Inhibiting Tyrosinase Activity: Alpha-Arbutin can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, which is a key enzyme in melanin formation. Tyrosinase is responsible for converting tyrosine (an amino acid) into dopa, which is a precursor of melanin. By inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, Alpha-Arbutin can reduce the synthesis of dopa, thereby decreasing melanin formation.
Blocking Melanin Transfer: Alpha-Arbutin can also block the transfer of melanin, i.e., preventing melanin from transferring from melanocytes to the skin's surface. This process requires melanin granules to move within skin cells and release melanin onto the skin's surface, forming pigmentation. By blocking this process, Alpha-Arbutin can reduce pigmentation on the skin's surface, resulting in the lightening of spots and achieving even skin tone.
