Bitter orange (scientific name: Citrus × aurantium), also known as lime and Seville citrus, is a hybrid of pomelo (Citrus maxima) and tangerine (Citrus reticulata), and belongs to the genus citrus of the rutaceae family.
The bitter orange is an artificial hybrid, so it has no native range, but is widely cultivated around the world. Bitter orange originated in Asia (especially Southeast Asia). According to Wikipedia, it spread from Southeast Asia to the Islamic world through India in 700 AD. Bitter orange extract powder can be used to refine essential oils and make perfume raw materials. Neroli derived from it is used as the base fragrance of cologne; and in the process of refining neroli oil, fragrant bitter orange flower water is also produced. The branches, leaves and immature fruits of bitter orange can also be used to extract petitgrain essential oil.
